Basilisk #09

As in the previous episode, this is solely based on the raw, so I’m just guessing here.

Oboro’s fairytale life is quickly fading away now that she’s been informed of the peace treaty being broken, and that also means that her and Gennosuke are now technically enemies….

Nevertheless, she still loves him and seeks out to find him, but he’s currently surrounded by Iga’s hostile ninjas who are just as eager to get rid of him. However, Tenzen tells them to wait and be patient and not to attack him, as I’m sure he’s aware of Gennosuke’s massive strength and doesn’t want anyone to die. During their intense stand-off, Hotarubi demands to know what they did to Yashamaru, and from the looks of it, she’s devastated by their reponse. Saemon mentions Kazamachi’s name, and I’m assuming that it has something to do with a “kill for a kill.”

Despite Tenzen’s instructions to wait, Nenki orders five random ninjas to attack the three Kougas. Without even moving a muscle, Gennosuke opens his glowing eyes to reveal his most powerful weapon – the power to make his attackers use their own weapons against themselves - and they end up killing themselves and each other. Tenzen and the others are utterly shocked by Gennosuke’s massive power, and Oboro nearly faints after seeing so much blood and violence. She’s also never seen Gennosuke like this before, and he’s extremely cold toward her now that they’re no longer at peace. Now that they’ve seen a taste of his abilities, they’re careful to clear a path for him as he walks past them unscathed. It’s clear that Oboro’s begging to see the old kind and gentle Gennosuke again, but he doesn’t give her anything – not even a glance – and walks right past her as if she meant absolutely nothing to him. (Damn you, Gennosuke, for hurting her feelings and making her cry!) Tenzen’s probably humiliated enough that he wasn’t able to do anything to stop Gennosuke, so he orders Koshiro to attack them. He begins by throwing his discs at them, but fails to leave even a scratch. He then uses his decapitating wind, but Oboro gets in the way and prevents him from using it. Tenzen tells her to stop Gennosuke by looking directly into his eyes, but instead of hurting him she covers her face, enabling Gennosuke to use Koshiro’s wind to backfire on himself. (At this point I’m thinking, Oboro, look at what you did?! Can’t you see that Gennosuke doesn’t love you anymore? Instead of defending your own people, you’ve chosen to help your destined enemy!) Even though he’s treating her like dirt, Oboro still loves him and wants to be with him despite everything that he’s done. I’m almost certain that the same can’t be said of Gennosuke, though. He’s probably through with her and most likely will never see her again unless it’s to kill her, unfortunately. Would he easily be able to do that, though? Is it in him to be that cold? Tenzen’s fuming because of Oboro’s inability to stop Gennosuke, and he’s probably wishing for Ogen to magically reappear, as she proved herself to be a much stronger leader.

Oboro later gets an earful from Tenzen about her lack of response to Gennosuke’s attacks, and I’m sure he’s reminding her that she’s the LEADER of Iga and needs to start behaving like one instead of a little child since things are just going to get worse from this point on. He’s also probably telling her that everyone in that room is prepared to risk their lives to protect the villagers, and she needs to do the same. However, she’s still heartbroken over Gennosuke and can’t bring herself to see things eye-to-eye with him, and it causes Tenzen to become even more frustrated and irate with her. I almost expected him to slap her back to reality, but he didn’t. He tells her about Kouga’s deliberate attack on Iga during the Tenshou period and how it nearly destroyed the village, and that it’s important not to trust them no matter how kind they appear to be. She excuses herself and opens a drawer from an empty room, revealing a jar filled with something. She returns to the group with the same jar in hand, but they’re shocked to find that she’s blinded herself instead of using them to her advantage. Meanwhile, Gennosuke, Saemon, and Gyoubu have safely returned to Kouga. Now that I think about it, Gennosuke could’ve easily wiped out Iga’s entire village while he was there, but he didn’t because I think he still cares for Oboro. At least I hope he still does. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next…

  • Gennosuke could easily be seen as a cold-hearted opportunist. The way I see it, he ignored Oboro to protect her. If either side thought that he still loved her, they would exploit this weakness. Either by using her against him, or killing her, to remove the weakness.

If it’s really 26 episodes, I might actually finish the manga first. The volumes are being published monthly over here, and the first two are already waiting for me.

  • bateau - That’s so true! I never thought about that, but that’s a very good possibility. I sure hope you’re right because I still want to believe that Gennosuke cares for her.

I’ve already read the first volume and at least half of the second, so I’m just waiting for the third to be translated. I sure wish the manga were published here. That would be awesome. :)

  • You can pre-order the Basilisk manga from rightstuf.. but it’s not available till 2012 they say. LOL

  • 2012? That’s insane!

  • i would say “good things come to those who wait” but… how could i when I don’t even believe that myself:P I’m all about the instant gratification baybeeee.

  • I’ve read the whole manga series. It seems that the anime is following the manga pretty closely, so I probably already know what is gonna happen.

I will try not to spoil anything, but here are some clarifications:

    1) I agree with bateau.

    2) Yes, Gennosuke probably could have wiped out most of the Iga village if he wanted. They’d kill Oboro first, which should not be hard since all three Kouga there are good at taijutsu. With Oboro gone, the rest of Iga would be powerless against Gennosuke.

    3) Even though Oboro didn’t use her eyes to help Koshiro, her getting in Koshiro’s way might have saved Koshiro’s life. I’m not sure about the anime, but in the manga, Koshiro was already under the influence of Gennosuke’s eyes when Oboro jumped in between them.

    4) The medicine Oboro used only blinds (by preventing the eyes from opening) people for seven days.

  • CCl-thanks for providing some answers to my query. I know some people don’t like spoilers but I enjoy them alot so I like to find out about events in the series ASAP. Here are some questions I like answers and to not offend others with spoilers could you please email me, if possible answers to the following questions:
    1. Did Gennosuke intentionally carry out plots to wipe out the Iga clans and kill Oboro?
    2. Does he really love Oboro?
    3. What is his relationship with Kagera (woman playing with fire), did they once romanced?
    4. Did Gennosuke ever see Oboro again soon after the fighting scene in Iga village or they didn’t see each other till the very end of the series?
    5. How did Iga people treat Oboro knowing she’s not willing to fight against Kouga?

My email address is brainyscholar@yahoo.com. Thanks a million.

  • ….uh uh, spoilers!! >_

  • I think Oboro is kinda smart too because by killing herself she gets to be with Gennosuke and her people will live in prosperity as she was the last to die. I don’t think men are obligated to love. I don’t think you can force them to love nonetheless to die with you. This way Gennosuke betrayed his grandfather because by saying Oboro was the last to die all the credit went to Iga who will prosper from this lie. To me, I don’t think Danjo love Ogen enough to die with her. Instead he chose to kill her for his clan as well as he himself live if not for Ogen who avenged her own death by killing Danjo. Ogen and Danjo were about to consummate their relationship shown in the flashbacks yet they didn’t love each other enough to die for each other. On the other hand, their dating grandchildren, although their relationship was obviously not as far along as them, die for or die with each other. Gennosuke was willing to betray his clan for Oboro’s sake. Now that’s an honorable man who was in love.

  • So ep 11 raw is up for grabs. Now I don’t understand any Japanese but I thought that Kagera asked Gennosuke whether he loves Oboro or not. Well, maybe I’m wrong. It’s just some wishing thoughts. If someone already watched this ep and new what’s the conversation about please tell. I don’t know if this is a spoiler or not as ep 11 is already out and I don’t understand a bit of what’s going on so I’m making presumptions-I guess I’m safe.

  • I’ve never posted in here, but after seeing epsidode 9 I REALLY hope Gennosuke still loves Oboro!!!!!!

  • kreutzerlove - You will be pleased with episodes 11 & 12.

    Thanks for the comment!
