Elfen Lied #8

Poor Nana, first she gets shot by Bando, and now Kouta has slapped her for hitting Nyuu. Nana tries to tell them that Lucy’s really an evil person, but they’ve only seen her as innocent Nyuu and can’t fathom anything other than what’s in front of their own eyes. She can’t get through to them, so she runs away in disgust while they continue smothering Nyuu as if she’s the only one who’s been hurt by all of this.

Kakuzawa-sensei’s assistant delivers his severed head to his father and assumes that she’ll get to leave scotch free, but she’s in for a surprise when Kakuzawa pulls a gun on her and tells her that he can’t afford to have her leaking top-secret information to the public. She thinks he’s bluffing and starts to walk away, but he shoots her in the shoulder to make sure she doesn’t go anywhere and demands to know who’s the other person that also knows about the virus. She tells him that a boy was looking for the girl the professor had taken custody of, but she had already disappeared by the time they arrived. She’s surprised that Kakuzawa has allowed her to live, but his only purpose of keeping her alive is to have her continue his son’s work.

Mayu chases after Nana to give her back her purse, but Nana doesn’t want it anymore and tells Mayu that she hates her. Mayu grabs her arm, but Nana struggles to get away, and Mayu pulls on the arm so hard that it pops off and both of them go flying in opposite directions. They finally sit down to talk, and Nana tells Mayu about Lucy’s escape from the research lab as well as her being responsible for ripping off her arm and leg. Mayu doesn’t believe her, so Nana demonstrates her special abilities by slicing a statue in half as well as reattaching her arm with her invisible hands. Mayu’s still not convinced that Nyuu and Lucy are the same person, and even Nana’s starting to have her doubts as well. However, Lucy wakes up from her fever and gets out of bed to finish what she started with Nana. Kouta stops her from leaving, though, and tells her that she’s being stupid, and she gets back in bed with an annoyed look on her face. Kouta tells her that she has to bring her fever down, and it triggers a flashback of her painful childhood.

Lucy was constantly being harassed and bullied by a group of boys in her school, and they thrived on making her feel as miserable as possible by knocking her to the ground and calling a her a demon’s child. Her one true friend was a little puppy that she often visited when she snuck food to him, and she tells the only girl who was friendly to her about the dog, naively trusting her not to say anything. However, she’s horrified to see that the bullies have her puppy in their possession at school the next day, and they threaten to beat the crap out of her puppy unless she cries and begs for it back. However, she kicks the main bully instead and they force her to watch helplessly as they beat the puppy to a bloody pulp. The stupid girl walks in and apologizes to Lucy about telling them, but it’s too late for her to feel bad about it now. Lucy turns into a psycho and instantly kills every one of them, leaving the room a bloody mess. She makes a small gravestone for her little puppy and blames his death on herself for being different. She hears some noise behind her and notices an open music box playing. Kouta picks it up and stares at her as if he’s just seen a ghost…and we’ll have to wait for the next episode to see what’s going to happen…

  • Those kids were awful! You don’t mess with Nyuu/Lucy like that

Hee, hee, I already know what’s going to happen  Hope l33t-raws has tonight’s episode soon :)

btw, you might want to use the title attribute (instead of alt) for your comments on the screencaps so the Firefox users out there can read them, too

  • Matthew - I could totally relate to Lucy’s rage. I would’ve done the same, except I’d torture those kids slowly instead of killing them instantaneously.

That’s so cool that you can understand the raws. I’m currently learning both Mandarin and Japanese, so hopefully I’ll be able to watch the raws myself by the end of the year. That would be more than awesome.

Thanks for the great tip! I’ve been using Firefox lately, and I was wondering how to get the captions to work. That really helps. :)

  • No problem :)

And if you need any Japanese help don’t be afraid to ask! (maybe I can help, lol) I still don’t understand everything I watch raw perfectly, but that’s mostly because I’m too lazy to look stuff up

  • Matthew, they just diverged from the Manga storyline quite a bit in ep9. I am not certain anymore if they’re really headed for the Vol7 ending - which is a very good thing. More excitement for us ^_^

Oh, and you’re all pretty scary :} … isn’t it already way enough that the kids are dead?

  • I just finished watching ep9. Most of it didn’t seem to be too different, except that they didn’t get to that part.. I’m going to have to reread stuff again since I’ve kinda forgotten the details of what happened, lol.

  • The cliffhanger? Them facing off again in front of all others, and now Mayu KNOWS? I consider this a _major_ change.

  • I’m dying to know what has changed from the original script in the manga, but that would probably include revealing major spoilers, so nevermind…I’ll just watch, and you could tell me when it’s all over. :)

  • God, your screenshots really scare me. The effects are even greater when it comes to that decapitate man. Please please pleaase consider using more appropriate images alright?

  • Hi Rainy,

I apologize if my screenshots scare you, but this is what the anime is about — a girl who is a vicious murderer and is on the loose. It’s not for kids, and the images are meant to shock the viewers.

  • The little girl that said she felt sorry really wasn’t. There was one part where she had her had in her hands and made it look like she was crying. But if you looked closely you saw she had a smile on her face.

P.S. I probably would’ve done worse than what Lucy did. :twisted:I would’ve done it slowly and then save that lil idiot girl for last. ( this episode pisses me off i still can’t believe those little kids did that!. BUt they got what they deserved.^_^

  • i saw that evil grin on that girls face i do not like lucy but what those bullies did was wrong that girl tricks her then they kill her dog thats terrible but lucy is just as bad for killing kanae and lucy still must pay

  • I agree with Jayjay. Lucy was way out of line murdering all of those innocent people. I did feel sorry for her when her dog was murdered, but that gave her no excuse to kill all of those little kids. What is wrong with the majority of you people? Why do you think its right to murder children? And as for the little girl why do you all think she’s evil. Don’t forget she was the only girl who was Lucy’s friend. If she was evil then why did she save her from the bullies, wipe milk off Lucy’s backpack, offer her help and friendship, and give extra food to the dog. I do believe that she told them on accident. You forget her age. Little kids can’t keep secrets for incredibly long lengths of time. Don’t forget Lucy is more intelligent than other children her age, making her more capable of keeping big secrets. That little girl was just excited about the puppy and probably blurted it out by mistake. She almost did that in front of Lucy. I didn’t see an evil grin. And if she was smiling it probably wasn’t on purpose. I don’t understand why but sometimes when people are truly upset their reflexes sort of smile when they cry. Didn’t you see how upset she was about the dog. She tried to get the bullies to stop. You guys need to look harder for the good sides in people.

  • Lucy’s childhood actually reminded me alot of my own childhood. I wasn’t physically abused in anyway but alot of kids from my school, summer school and a few of my older cousins would usually bully me and taunt me. They would usually play mean jokes on me, call me disturbing names and I would always be left out whenever they played a game. Even if they invited me to play with them, they would always come up with a little plan to gang up on me. Now that I look back, it wasn’t very serious and I could have simply ignored them but I chose not to due to my immaturity. My childhood is nothing compared to Lucy’s. She was traumatized in the most disturbing ways possible. The kids that harrassed her were all immature and young and didn’t know better. Although Lucy did overreact over her puppy’s death, I probably would have done the same if I were in her position and age at the time. I admit, I held a grudge against my cousins and peers that made fun of me and sometimes I wished something horrible would happen to them. I’m not saying that killing people is the right solution to calm your anger/fury. It is just human nature to take revenge on the people you hate, though we all know that revenge won’t solve the problem. In my opinion, Lucy is very human despite the fact that she is sadistic. She just had the potential and power to eliminate the people that upset her. Also, she wasn’t given any love as a child so it’s no wonder she kills people recklessly.

  • It’s not fair that the puppy died. Poor Lucy. No wonder she’s so homicidal. Those guys were just terrible and so was that traitor girl!  All of this freaking fuss over horns! They say Lucy’s not a human but all those things they did to her were super-inhumane and they looked very inhumane when they were smiling about torturing the pooch! I’m glad they died! Everyone who saw the series hate those guys!

Why couldn’t the dog be saved? Why couldn’t there be like 2 more girls with horns like her to help her and stop those evil brats?

Lucy so did not deserve the trauma! She’s not a freak either! When I saw that traitor girl smiling about Lucy’s torment, I wanted to spank her hard! No kid should ever be like that!

I really believe that scene should be fixed for the better to save Lucy’s puppy! Don’t you guys agree with me? I really feel bad for Lucy and her puppy and I love animals! Please help me with this!

  • Secretgirl, I do agree with you…. When I realised those kids had killed the puppy in that scene, I did cry a few minutes after and I thought it was unneccessary for that scene to occur… I mean 10 year olds can be bad, but I never met a 10 year old who killed a puppy with his bare hands, or 4 others that watched and smiled sadistically about it. When I was 8, one of my friends accidentally killed a bird when he threw a rock to get a ball down from a tree, and he cried for an hour because he realised the bird had died…

The thing is with those bullies, if they had kept picking on Lucy everyday, by kidnapping the puppy, eventually they would have killed it… As sad as that scene was, it was more humane for the poor little helpless, homeless puppy to die, rather than it wandering the cold forest alone with broken limbs and broken ribs and suffering like it would have, had it lived. The bullies could have even tortured it and broken its legs and left Lucy to find it unable to walk, and they probably would have if it had lived….. I just really wished during that scene that those bastard children could have died before the dog did, so Lucy could have gotten it to a vet or somewhere safe. I’m very sad for this puppy and had a feeling in the pit of my stomach before I saw the scene… it’s there to also serve as a constant between puppies or baby animals/children who all have one thing in common, INNOCENCE and LONELINESS. People who are innocent/lonely like homeless children/baby animals depend on others to survive… Without the kindness of others, they simply can’t… The one thing that doesn’t make sense is that if Diclonius’ were more intelligent than children, you think that Lucy may have anticipated that scenario and just have not told anyone about her puppy. However, they still have the innocence of children much like Nana [who is the most innocent and doesnt want to harm humans]. Innocence obviously means that like a child or a puppy, you trust anyone who is meant to not harm you, but in the case of Lucy, Mariko and Mayu, all were mistreated by people, even of their own blood….

It would have been nicer if Lucy took her Puppy and ran away like Mayu did, but Koda’s house [Kaede House?]seems to be the antithesis to all thats been done wrong to these poor souls in their past, including himself.

But the point of the puppy scene seems to be that Lucy has basically received the worst possible treatment by humans and was being schooled in a place where no adults cared enough to be around or help the kids [and probably wouldnt have due to her horns]… I think the part where the girl smiles fiendishly was just thrown in… Why would she help Lucy? then tell the bullies about her puppy? then cry? and then smirk about it? Doesnt really make that much sense but maybe she just decided to conform like so many kids do to not be bullied themselves…..

I think we are almost meant to take comfort in the fact that Mayu’s puppy [Watao?] is Lucy/Nyu getting a second chance at having an innocent animal friend… It also explains why both Lucy and Nyu both took the lead off Mayu’s puppy on different occassions.. she remembers [subconsciously for Nyu] whats happened to the previous dog she befriended.

I believe Elfen Lied carries a large theme of cyclical abuse/ destruction to it as well… Think about the puppy scene, Lucy has something taken away from her, something innocent that she loves, and she is defenless against the opposing forces [bullies]. Then she does the same thing to Koda who is defenless against the onslaught of Lucy’s vectors and he begs her to stop, even though it is too late [same thing with the puppy]. Violence [from evil] only begets more violence, until humanity has destroyed itself. The only way to break out of this is LOVE… Koda loved Lucy/Nyu despite the fact that he couldn’t forgive what she did… Mayu’s Puppy loved her, despite the fact he had a home already… Nana loved Nyu despite her being Lucy aswell… Yuka loved Koda, despite him loving Nyu and living with other women/girls because she realised they reminded him of his little sister.

The point is there are evil people out there, but we have to find LOVE to those who won’t treat us that way, to those who love us. Mayu tells Yuka that Koda treats the house members besides Yuka like family, even though society had given up on them… And I mean Lucy’s poor puppy was obviously not loved or never had a home in it’s short life, nobody probably ever cared for it or just dumped it in the woods, i mean puppies that little dont just run away, they cling to you like you’re their parent…And I know it’s sad but, well at least the gorgeoous little puppy was loved, and loved a lot by Lucy before it died. If it had died without anyone loving it and slowly starving to death, unable to fend for itself at such a young age, well who knows what else may have happened to it. At the very least it was loved and had someone who was willing to fight for it there with it until it breathed its last breath.

  • Also I’d just like to add that when the ringleader of the bullies asked his friend to hold the puppy down before he beat it, I think it would have been more realistic and humane of the bullies [and the creators] if the ring leader stayed and the bullies ran away because they got scared… I mean in the end all bullies are scared which is why they bully to have dominance and re-assert themselves and their place as the alpha-male [or female]… There’s a good chance all the bullies were from broken homes where there was no hope left for them, but it’s more realistic that only one of the at best would actually want to kill the dog enough to get a rise out of Lucy and that would and should have been the ring leader, whilst the others would have run away…. It’s very unlikely every single one of those kids came from broken homes, including the girl who decided to join the bullies in the end and grin sadistically.

Once again I think the scene would have actually been more powerful in a JUST sense if the puppy lived, maybe the girl didn’t betray Lucy/Nyu but the bullies found out she had a puppy cos they followed her[as an example of another scenario] and then they tried to harm it, but it got away and Lucy/Nyu Killed the ring leader, while the other bullies ran away….. I kind of feel as if the external obstacles the characters had to face were just insane and torturous compared ot the inner struggles which were actually shown in the anime[kind of the anti-thesis to say Evangelion] I think external problems tug at the heart-strings a lot more when all we, the viewer can do is sympathise rather than empathise with often general internal struggles which are more a conflict of the perceptions one has of reality…

In any case, cruelty to animals is heinous, hopefully watching this series will open peoples’ eyes a lot…. I’m betting there are people who have been cruel to animals and have watched this only to break into tears and repentance as well, so that can be one positive outlook for it… To torture is one thing, to torture until you physically take someones life is a much bigger sin, and IMO is inexcusable especially to an animal which would trust whomever holds it and sadly, still love you unconditionally if you beat it to within an inch of its life on a daily basis.

Be safe all, and have a happy new year… Maybe nobody endure the pain shown in Elfen Lied.

    Peace

I do believe the certain elements of external torture make the world of EL seem like a bleak place in which existence only belongs and gets passed to the evil-doers, but I’m glad that in Kaede house they all found peace in the end…

Happy New yr and all the best people! May nobody suffer the traumas in EL.

    Peace

  • Wow… Jay-Em…I never thought of the puppy’s life (before meeting Lucy)like that.

Poor Birdy may he rest in peace.

It’s just that, Back in June of 2009 when I saw this episode, I could not sleep at night peacefully and the scene kept popping up in my head like every 10 minutes. I wondered where the teacher was. :?:

That’s why I tried to get approval from the creators of the manga and anime, to save the puppy, so Lucy’s life wouldn’t be so dreadful. Would it work?

A lot of people wanted the brats to be tormented to death for their sinful plan and have Lucy’s puppy saved.

I learned one more thing about humanity: Being a human isn’t just about looking normal… it’s about acting like one, too.

I’ve been too busy watching anime where horned people and cat people and etc. got along with humans.

    http://forums.animesuki.com/archive/index.php/t-26493.html

Three Months Ago, It was from this site I figured out that the Director interfered wirh Lucy’s life for his plan to get rid of all humans. Lucy’s mother was gonna pick her up soon.

Since then, I also thought of how Lucy’s life would be played out if she had her puppy, many siblngs and mother with her.

So my mind has be thinking about Elfen Lied a lot lately.

And your plan is nice, too.

Without the ringleader’s followers, The puppy would run to Lucy and she would kill him, and she would show the remaining kids his corpses, saying that the girl is a liar and the follower boys are weaklings. She would say they, along with ringleader that they are not human. She would kill them too, so they couldn’t tell they teacher. So she and her puppy would leave together.

Lucy, Mariko, and Nana are my favorite characters and they derserve a lot better. They deserve love and care.

Happy New Year to you and everyone else!

Let there be no tragic events on pets and family.

  • P.S.

They probably made Lucy tell the traitor girl, despite the Diclonius intelligence, because they wanted to create a heavy reason for Lucy’s killngs.

So many people wanted The kids to die and have the puppy spared for Lucy because puppies are cute and innocent like Lucy before she became a killer.

But others want Lucy to pay for killing them, despite what they did to the dog. Because murdered children are more important to them.

Maybe if the puppy was alive, Lucy probably would have never killed Kohta’s father and sister.

  • How can I contact Lynn Okamoto and Mamoru Kanbe? They’re the ones who made Elfen Lied. I want to save people from felling the same trauma me and Lucy felt.

  • I’m not sure how to contact them… Surely they work somewhere which you can contact?

The lesson is that torment/violence only leads to destruction… Even you had petitioned to save the puppy, the anime has been made so it won’t change what’s happened.

Let this just be a lesson in our own lives to be peaceful and really LOVE one another… If you show somebody love and they don’t reciprocate, well it’s their loss… We all need to love which includes compassion, mercy, sympathy and empathy and the most important one forgiveness.

I couldn’t sleep after seeing that episode either, but i do believe EL taught me a very valuable lesson… and it’s made me see the world and love my animals and children a lot more on a deeper and more profound level. I also can empathise with Lucy/Nyu because we are all capable of becoming evil if we are exposed to the wrong facets of life. You can have a million good experiences, but one bad one or say three-four relaly bad ones in Lucy’s case is enough to set you off and turn you evil and twisted.

Kohta is the most valuable character in teaching us that, he loves Lucy unconditionally, without excusing what she’s done to his family, and in the end I feel bad for Lucy and her puppy and everyone else, but Kohta had his whole family taken away from him after he told his sister he’d HATE her forerver… Even after all that, he still loves Lucy. Kohta is strong, I really don’t think I could ever be that strong like he was.

I loved the little puppy too, but Lucy/Nyu had a second with Wanta [Mayu's pup]. I like to think it’s the same puppy re-incarnated into Wanta, who may have suffered a tradgic death, but has been given a second chance with Mayu and the rest of the people at Kaede House.

Secretgirl, one more thing, if you truely want to save people from feeling what Lucy felt, just LOVE. You don’t have to love those that don’t love you, but just love. I can guarantee you rather than changing the outcome of an anime/manga you can reach out to so many more people by practising what you preach. BE the change you want to see and follow Ghandi’s advice. Why not adopt a dog yourself?

Remember one person can’t change everyone else’s world. You can’t change people, but we can change uour own worlds for the better and influence other people to change theirs by doing that. The world is what we make it, when we have a choice… And when we have that choice, we should choose to appreciate, forgive and LOVE.

    Peace, one love.

  • Thank you. I believe in re-incarnations, too.
