Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror #10

I’m not sure if this story is supposed to be comical, but I found the characters’ overdramatic reactions to the mysterious occurrences absolutely hilarious. Their bizarre mannerisms as well as their expressions are completely off the wall, but I think it’s more entertaining watching that than a bunch of characters that are completely boring (i.e. Ten Shu Mono Gatari). What I especially enjoy about this episode is that we’re not presented with another predictable story. Just when you think that’s all there is to the suspense, something truly creepy occurs to make your heart flutter. I certainly didn’t expect the “incident” to occur, and neither did any of the characters involved. All of you cat-haters will probably get a kick out of this episode as well.

Love Celeb - King Egoist (Chapter 10)

It’s been a long time since ShoujoMagic has released a new chapter of this juicy title, so it was a pleasant surprise to see it listed on their updates page. It took me a few minutes to remember what had happened in the last chapter, but it’s such a simple story that it isn’t difficult to get right back into it. I remember reading this title early on in the year when I was just starting to take an interest in the world of Shoujo manga, and it was such a pleasure reading chapter after chapter of this steamy story. I still find the latest chapter an enjoyable read, but it doesn’t give me the same excited response as it once had. Maybe it’s because I’ve gotten over my lust for Gin, or perhaps it’s just that my tastes have simply changed. I love most of SM’s projects, but I’ll have to admit that the title I’m most looking forward to reading is Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru. I’m not sure if they’re going to continue scanlating this title, but I would definitely like to see more of this. Now, that story truly excites me. There’s nothing better than watching Yori going down on his little sister…in their imaginary world, of course. Anyway, back on topic…

Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror #09

We’ve finally reached the third and most anticipated arc of this series. I’ve been looking forward to watching this because of all the positive feedback I’ve heard about it, and I want to see for myself whether it’ll live up to its positive reviews. Even watching the first few minutes I could tell that we’re in for a treat. The medicinal merchant with the funny-looking make-up is interesting and uniquely sensuous in his mannerisms, and I can’t wait to see more of him. As for the animation itself, the first thing I notice is that it has very unique artwork. It’s definitely different in that it almost feels like I’m watching a moving painting, and I like the fact that the director purposely uses slow-motion movements to emphasize a certain feeling in many of the suspenseful scenes. This show is a little hard to follow because you aren’t given any solid explanation of what’s happening, but that’s what makes it entertaining - you don’t know what’s going to happen next.

Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror #08

To be honest, this arc absolutely sucked. Don’t even bother watching it if you haven’t yet already because it really isn’t worth your time. It’s been a day or two since I watched the final episode, and I hardly remember anything from it. It isn’t that I have a short memory (okay, maybe somewhat of a short memory due to my lack of sleep), but the characters were so easily forgettable and uninspiring that I just couldn’t get myself to enjoy this (unbelievable) love story. Also, the ending didn’t really have any solid conclusion because it felt rushed and incomplete, and I think these characters all deserved what was coming to them. Why? Several reasons come to mind.

Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror #07

If you’re wondering why I’ve been exclusively blogging Ayakashi lately, I have a simple explanation for this – I am simply aiming to finish what I started. Too many times I’ve procrastinated on completing a series only to find that it’s too late to continue or I lose interest in it altogether, and I don’t want to continue down that same path again. I can already see myself losing interest in this title very quickly simply because there isn’t anything that makes it truly phenomenal or unique. You’ve got horror and suspense, but it isn’t one of those that keep you up at night for all eternity. “The Ring” comes to mind when thinking of this genre of horror, but this title certainly doesn’t have that quality to it. Perhaps if it were to be turned into a live-action adaptation, my opinion may be a little different. Now, getting back to this current arc. I just can’t get myself to feel sorry for any of these characters even after watching the third episode. Okay, so Zusho-no-Suke-san is madly in love with a goddess who consumes human flesh. Are we supposed to feel sympathy for him? I think it’s pretty messed up that he abandoned a perfectly beautiful woman for this goddess who doesn’t even have anything special to offer. In this episode, she has to choose between her family or her human lover, and I’m pretty disappointed in her decision.
