Renton experiences the ride from hell when he joins Eureka in the Nirvash during another practice session and finds himself vomiting all over himself due to the nauseating aerial acrobatics that Eureka performs. His day worsens when Eureka’s bratty kids annoyingly pick on him about smelling like vomit and being an incompatible match for her. To make matters worse, he also unintentionally reveals his feelings about Eureka to an eavesdropping Talho and desperately offers himself as her personal slave to hush her from revealing his embarrassing confession to everyone else. It’s also apparent in this episode that Talho and Holland are an item, as she gets angrily jealous when Holland decides to ride with Eureka and she gets stuck riding in Mattheiu’s 606 with Hilda and Renton.
While Hilda’s busy shopping for supplies, Talho drags Renton around and into a lingerie shop where she embarrasses the hell out of him by showing him two revealing bras. Then she makes him carry her heavy shopping bags around while she slowly dawdles from one shop to another just to torture him. He finally gets a break from carrying her bags when she stops at a restaurant for a drink, but she ends up getting herself into trouble when she goes outside to tell a bunch of horny guys to stop playing their lousy music and breaks their camera after snapping photos of her. As a result, the main guy knocks her to the ground and tries to rape her, so Renton immediately does all he can to defend her but ends up getting knocked down himself. He even tries to fight them in the LFO, but he’s unable to control it and ends up getting beaten again. Fortunately, Holland comes to her rescue just in time and beats them to a bloody pulp (or so I’m hoping).
It seems that Renton’s finally earned everyone’s respect at the Gekko-go now that he tried his best defending Talho by fighting opponents who clearly were much stronger than him. However, he also discovers that everyone had already known about his interest in Eureka, so he had been Talho’s personal slave for nothing! Despite all that, it’s nice to see that people are finally treating him with decency, although he’ll probably still have to deal with those bratty kids following Eureka for a while. Looks like next episode will be a boring filler, though.
It’s been seven days since Renton left Bellforest for the Gekkostate, and he’s disappointed that nobody has tried to Ref even once. However, he realizes that he’s only there to train, so he doesn’t feel that it’s his right to complain. He’s also taking his job of watching over the Amita Drive seriously, but Talho has appointed him as her personal slave and has made it difficult for him to watch over the drive as often as he’d hoped. After sending an errand to Holland, he also discovers that the Gekkostate is in dire need of funds, and his grandpa’s words of wisdom have finally started sinking in that reality is different from imagination. He’s definitely not happy with the way things have turned out, and he knows that something’s not right. The first time I’ve seen him happy all episode is when he sees Eureka smiling and gushing with excitement that she had fun flying with him and hopes to experience that euphoria again every time she flies.
All Gekkostate residents have gathered together at a mandatory meeting to come up with ideas to make some easy cash, and Holland announces that whoever’s idea is implemented will win the prize of being kissed by Talho, much to her horror. Renton’s disappointed by the “prize” and would rather just see Eureka’s smile. His cheeks turn bright red as he’s daydreaming about her again, but Talho assumes he’s thinking about her and informs him that she won’t be giving him a kiss anytime soon since he owes her for slacking on his tasks. Disappointed by his experiences with the residents thus far, he’s lost as how to gain their trust. However, he sees a flyer laying on the ground for a Ref competition and suggests it to them at another meeting, but he’s practically ignored by everyone, especially by his idol Holland, and is disappointed that his only job onboard is being the resident slave. While they’re out on a mission to make some money, Renton’s job is to hold the two Compac Drives in the ice chest while Eureka pilots the Nirvash, but he’s bored and unhappy that he’s being dragged along until they hover above a military base and display an amazing show of piloting skills. His mood immediately lifts when they run into a Trapar wave, and he finally gets to witness his favorite idol Holland Reffing in front of his very eyes. Every bad thought that he had about Gekkostate and its residents had disappeared at that very moment…until the contents of the ice box are revealed by accident, and he’s just realized that he wasn’t carrying the Compac Drives but a vital organ that had been taken from a poor man paying his debts. Unfortunately, Renton’s resumed his job of being the resident slave and is left to clean up the bathroom by himself. While there, Mattheiu informs him that Reffing for money is big no-no at the Gekkostate, and that’s the reason why Renton was ignored earlier. He also tells him that Eureka’s not really the mother of those children, and relieved of hearing the good news, Renton thanks him for being so kind and cool, as he’s the only one that’s truly been nice to him since he arrived.
Ah, I guess this is Renton’s “hazing” period before he’s accepted as an official member of Gekkostate. It looks like he’ll have to earn his way toward being respected by the community, but he’ll have to endure a lot of crap before he gets to that point. I bet he’s appreciating the comfortable life he had at home where he didn’t have to worry about much except for finding good waves. I can understand why his grandfather wanted him to stay home and become a mechanic – he probably knew that Renton’s life would be easier. Well, we’ll see what’s in store for our lead protagonist in the next episode.
Renton uses the opportunity to check out Eureka’s pretty face while her eyes are closed, and his cheeks comically turn bright red as thoughts of perversion dance around his head. However, his thoughts are interrupted when Eureka opens her eyes and tells him that he’s like her child…not exactly the response he expected to hear. As she walks away to report to Holland, he conveniently finds a book hidden underneath all the rubble on what men should do when meeting a beautiful woman, and he reads a passage with the disappointing news that any chance of a blossoming romance will be difficult if a “sibling-like” relationship is established first. Renton now believes that his chances of being with her are next to zero, and it’s funny seeing the images popping up in his head as he thinks out loud. He’s slow to realize that she’s been listening to him the entire time, but she doesn’t seem bothered by it and even tells him that she used to know someone interesting like him in the past.
He later apologizes to his grandpa for running away from his responsibilities, and he promises to never run away again. He’s even vowed to train to become a mechanic one day, and this of course makes his grandpa cry like a baby. However, he ends up leaving with Eureka toward the Gekko State after making that promise to his grandpa, leaving his elder by himself yet again. While in the air, they’re welcomed by the military with a string of bullets, but Eureka’s elite piloting skills are able to get them out of trouble. She also manages to give Holland’s Gekko-Go a safe escape toward safety by taking advantage of the Trapar winds.
When Renton finally meets the inhabitants of the Gekko State, he’s immediately known as the one who made Eureka laugh, but they’re clearly not impressed by him and thinks he’s just a normal kid who’s too stupid to even be an idiot. Disappointed by his looks and mannerisms, the crowd walks away except for Talho (the pilot of Gekko-Go), who thinks Renton’s cute and pinches his cheeks before disappearing with everyone else. Instead of surprising everyone else, he gets the surprise of a lifetime when he discovers that Eureka’s a mother of three children! It looks like things won’t be going as smoothly as he’d hoped.
Another great episode of Eureka 7! Renton’s quirky personality definitely makes this show worth watching, and I’m looking forward to more laughs from him. I’ve also noticed that the majority of pilots in this show are female, which is quite a nice change to see.
As they’re continuing their journey to Sunpu by land, Gennosuke reflects back on the last time he had laid eyes on Oboro. After confessing that they’re both drawn to one another in spirit, he tells her to close her eyes and is about to kiss her when he abruptly stops and notices someone approaching. It’s Koshiro telling her to see Tenzen…
Back in the present, Oboro refuses to cooperate with Tenzen and even tells him that she’d rather have Gennosuke kill her than being forced to fight him. This provokes Tenzen to ask Oboro to become his wife! However, it’s not out of love – he gives her a stupid excuse that raping her (or being with her, rather) would help her forget about Gennosuke, but I don’t see how it would. She tries to slap him away, but he quickly grabs her arms and slams her to the ground, ripping her kimono apart and partially exposing her breasts. Koshiro hears her screaming and ends up cutting himself, but he hesitates to move a muscle to save the woman he loves. Tenzen’s sitting on top of her and insists that he’s a man worthy of continuing her bloodline, but she screams that she doesn’t want him, Jingoro, or even Koshiro, yet she expects him to help her. He’s torn between helping her and staying loyal to Tenzen, his master. He doesn’t want to oppose him, yet he also realizes that Tenzen’s actions are wrong and acknowledges that Oboro IS their leader of Iga. He finally decides to save her at the last minute and yells at Tenzen to stop what he’s doing, but someone’s gotten to Tenzen first – Gyoubu. He easily crushes Tenzen’s neck and is about to do the same to Oboro when Jingoro and Akeginu enter the room and is surprised to see Tenzen’s limp body on the ground. Neither Oboro or Koshiro knew what happened due to their blindness, but Jingoro suspects that Tenzen’s death was Gyoubu’s doing and begins slashing the walls and the floor with his sword, hoping to swipe Gyoubu. He continues to pursue him throughout the ship, but he ends up getting himself overthrown and dies in the vast sea of salty ocean water. Akeginu tries her best to save him, but she’s too late by the time she reaches the water. Gyoubu’s confident that he’s killed two Igas in one day, but his eyes open with surprise as he sees Tenzen ALIVE and standing in front of him!
What a surprising ending to this episode! I wasn’t expecting Tenzen to live, but he seems to have the ability to defy death. I don’t know if he actually had the time to rape Oboro (since she was a virgin and all), but I’m assuming that he may have at least started to. In any case, I think he’s terrible for forcing himself upon Oboro, and he needs to pay for what he’s done. I felt really bad for Koshiro, though. She expected him to save her, yet she’s repulsed by the idea of loving him. That’s just wrong to me. However, I also know that it’s his duty and responsibility to protect her since she’s his leader, and in that context he shouldn’t even have hesitated to save her. All in all, everyone in this show suffers from some type of pain, whether it be emotional, physical, or mental. Looking forward to the next episode.
Gennosuke is still set on making it to Sunpu even without his eyesight since he’s determined to find out the retired Shogun’s true intentions before returning home. He’s also aware that the Iga ninjas would eventually attack, but he believes that if they had just sat and cowered, they would never have even attempted to make it to Sunpu. As he stands up to leave the room, Kagerou reaches for his hand, but he gently pushes her away and leaves her feeling rejected once again by the man she loves.
