Perfect Blue - “Excuse me… who are you?”

Perfect Blue

What can I write about Perfect Blue that hasn’t already been written? Like many others, I thought it was an excellent film that did a great job of presenting a fairly creepy psychological thriller for those of us achingly bored with most anime series on television nowadays. Never once did I yawn or take my eyes off the screen, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Mima’s character transition herself from a normal singing pop sensation to a completely frantic actress paralyzed by her own irrational fears of what is real and fictional in her world. What she believes to be her “breakthrough” role ultimately results in becoming her worst nightmare in a disturbingly puzzling trip through a bizarre tale of insanity. (Note: Spoilers are included in this review.)

D is for Defective (Mini RaHxephon Review)

I finished watching all twenty-six episodes of Rahxephon over the weekend, and I really enjoyed this series. It was much better than Neon Genesis Evangelion (at least Ayato wasn’t a wimp), and it actually had a happy ending. I would’ve liked to see how everyone else was doing besides just Ayato and Haruka, but it was nice to see that he had finally found what he truly wanted out of life. ^_^

I’m behind in just about every show, so I’ll need to write shorter entries to try to catch up…

Edit - Now that I’ve gotten over my Rahxephon phase, I completely take back what I wrote about it being a much better series than Neon Genesis Evangelion. I enjoyed watching Rahxephon, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression that Evangelion had (and still does to this day). It’s true that Shinji was a wimp in many episodes (and especially in End of Evangelion), but I definitely respected him as a character, and I still really liked him even though he chickened out and left Asuka to contend with all the Angels herself. You can attest to how good a series is if you don’t mind watching it more than three times. I could only watch Rahxephon once without getting bored of the storyline as well as the characters, but I’ve watched Evangelion at least twice, and I even bought the DVDs for it. I can’t say that it’s my favorite series, but it’s the only one that actually left me thinking about it for months, and I have to agree that no other series can beat this in storyline and character development. I humbly admit that my opinion of Rahxephon being a better series than Evangelion was a big mistake, and I sincerely apologize to the die-hard Evangelion fans out there for my reckless comment.

Well…

I’ve been watching a certain anime series, but it isn’t something that I feel worthy of writing about. Let’s just say it has a lame storyline with witchcraft, a book, sacrifices, and a lot of scenes that greatly enhance your senses. The ending was pretty crappy, but it served its purpose. That’s all I’ll say about it. I know that many of you may know which one I’m referring to. :)

Angel Sanctuary

If you love weird themes and a strange love between a brother and sister, you’ll love this series. Some people are disgusted by their weird desire to make love to one another, but I wasn’t bothered by it since it wasn’t based on reality. It’s a good series that’s worth watching, however. The character I enjoyed watching was Kira. What a hottie! Anyway, check it out when you have the chance.

Ai Yori Aoshi

I’ve been watching this series, and I really enjoy every episode. It has quite a bit of fanservice and lots of slapstick comedy, but there’s also a lot of romance and drama for those of us that enjoy these types of genres.

I particularly enjoy Aoi-Chan’s character because I can relate to her. She’s on the quiet side, and she rarely ever speaks up. Although she and Kaoru are in love, they have to keep it hidden from all the other girls in the household as not to start a scandal within her family. You’ll have to watch it to understand, but since she has to keep their relationship a secret, the other girls try their best to swoon him and try to do everything in their power to win his heart.

One scene in particular really struck a chord with me. It was the beach scene in which everyone was having fun at the beach, just enjoying the weather and having a good old time. However, Aoi-chan just sat by herself watching everyone else having fun because she was too shy to interact with them. In many ways, I feel the way she does. I have a hard time getting used to people, and I get really, really quiet when I’m not comfortable. I tend to isolate myself because I’m too shy to interact with everyone else. So, because she isolates herself, nobody pays attention to her and they just go about their business having fun without her. At the same time, she would like them to include her, but they’re human and they’re not that thoughtful. I also feel this way in social situations as well. How do you break out of that shell? Aoi-chan’s situation is so realistic that I can’t stop watching it. Perhaps she’ll be able to open herself up to people more, and maybe one day so will I.
